THAT was Thanksgiving?

My Thanksgiving HelHoliday was spent in the ER.
I was "blessed?" to work Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
Friday we celebrated Thanksgiving.
It included:
Pumpkin Pies............I forgot the sugar. (seriously NASTY)
4 (count 'em 4) attempts at making pie crusts. (all ended up in the garbage along with the nasTAY non-sugared Pumpkin pie)
I finally looked at the gray haired guy standing in the kitchen
...looking scared,
watching his wife come apart at the seams...
and I said through clenched teeth.....
"go buy some pie crusts from the store!"
Thank goodness that it was only Black Friday
and the grocery stores weren't the places to be.

It wasn't one of the more stellar meals that I've tried to prepare.
Thank goodness for Tara(DIL) and Lynsey(daughter) who made hams, salads and
food fit for human consumption.

But as we finally sat down to eat and I looked around at ALL of my family.
My dear patient husband who loves me in spite of me.
My five children who are growing up to be awesome people and great friends.
My three in-law children who I feel like I've know for the eternities.
My seven grandchildren who call me names like namma, gwamma, gramma Tauna, dramma.

If I could only have one word to describe the emotion of that moment
it would be fierce. I love them all so fiercely.
I would do anything for them.
I love them with everything that I have.
It took my breath away.

We only had one day of celebration together.
But I am blessed.

I would never try to make crusts to begin with! Sorry they didn't work out. I know how frustrating that is.

Happy belated Thanksgiving!

Oh the frustration! I feel your pain but in the end it really didn't matter anyway.

It was all about the blessing of family togetherness.....FOREVER!

The only crust I would attempt are graham cracker crusts. But I don't think pumpkin would go with graham cracker crusts very well. You are indeed blessed!

I had no idea pie crusts came from anything other than a store!!! But it sounds like you are REALLY blessed... it shows in your attitude towards life... it's why I love ya so much!

My pie crusts came with my Costco pies. Wonderful store that is.
As did my delicious secret recipe for turkey gravy.
You're right tho, in the end, it's not the food that matter, it's whose at the table with you.

Sounds a lot more hectic than usual! Hopefully from now on you can save yourself the trouble and always buy pie crust. Those things are a headache to make! :)

I made a huge meal but assigned the pies to others... ask me in a few weeks how that went.

Warning: do NOT ask about the gravy fiasco... that may take awhile to forgive.

Dramma, I love it!
Sweet, sweet post. Glad you could see past the worst parts, (which of course are always the parts that you remember the most fondly) to the true blessings in your life.

Sorry you had to work. Sorry about the pie and crust too. Seems like you are surrounded by a host of loving family even when things don't go right. God bless you all.

Pie crusts?? Way to go on the trying! My pies this year were made by my dear friend Sara Lee. She was so nice to make them just for me since I had the Plan B last minute planning!

I have a really, really great and easy recipe for pie crust. Ready? Open the box. Pull out the Pillsbury premade crust. Put it in your own pie plate so it looks like you made it. Make pie. Bake. Enjoy!

Seriously. I have never had this recipe fail me. And people ask for my pie crust recipe all the time!

That made me giggle....seriously Tauna, WHO makes their own pie crusts these days....who do you think you are Rachel Ray ???

BUT....In spite of your wretched time in the ER
to gather around the table, as a family, and feel consumed by all the love there
the emotions
the joy
swells within you to overflowing
I KNOW that feeling
that very very special feeling to be among those we love oh so much

Honestly, I think pumpkin pie is nasty anyway, so you're TOTALLY off the hook! There's just no way to make it taste good, no matter how much... or little, sugar you add.

Sorry you had to work so much!

And yea for having all your family around!

Tauna that is wonderful (well not the pies) but seriously family being together is THE most important.
I love all the grandma names you get to be called. You are one blessed woman!

P.S. We were 16 degrees today - I didn't think I lived in Rexburg...Hello!

There's nothing wrong with buying pie crusts! And there's everything right about being with family! I love the word you used to describe your love for your family. We truly are blessed!

Glad you had that wonderful moment when all was right!!! Thanks for sharing.

And...the next time my daughter has to go to the ER (which I hope is never) I might drive to see you! Our last experience at the hospital here was, shall we say, less than pleasant? Nurses were great, it was the arrogant doctor that had my blood boiling! Sheesh!!!
P.s. Aren't you supposed to buy pie crusts? Or were you trying to make the rest of us look bad?

Debby@Just Breathe said...

Sounds like it was beautiful. Next time buy the pies! I have been there, it's not much fun when recipes don't work. So glad you had a beautiful gathering.
